The network of bank branches is shrinking

Banks liquidate their outlets. Currently, there are 10.6 thousand bank outlets on the market. This is 30 percent less than ten years ago.

Still in 2012, the number of bank branches exceeded 15 thousand. This started to change after the financial crisis. At the end of April 2022, banks had 10.6 thousand branches. During the last one, the number of branches decreased by 832.

PKO BP has truncated its network by over 200 branches over the past 10 years. The number of agencies fell by 750. Pekao closed as many as 400 outlets, and Santander over 390. In 2021, almost every universal bank reduced the number of its own outlets. Closing outlets is a global trend.

Bank outlets are disappearing as more and more people use online and mobile banking. Moreover, the number of banks on the market itself is shrinking. In 2012 there were 45 commercial banks operating in Poland and this year there are only 30 of them. The number of cooperative banks has also decreased – from 572 to 502. It is mainly the effect of the sector consolidation.
