PKP Cargo in restructuring

Representatives of PKP Cargo submitted an application to the court to initiate restructuring proceedings.

Last week, the court received a request to open restructuring proceedings against the largest state-owned rail freight carrier in Poland, PKP Cargo. The carrier’s management board came up with this initiative. He sees court restructuring as a real chance to continue the business and solve mounting financial problems.

Recently, the above-mentioned problems have been increasingly discussed and various solutions have been proposed and attempted to be implemented. Firstly, at the beginning of June, the so-called forced absence from work, which, according to assumptions, will ultimately cover approximately 30% of employees. Secondly, representatives of PKO Cargo reached an agreement with PKP Intercity and Polregio regarding the employment of PKP Cargo employees. According to the signed letters of intent, the first carrier is to employ 400 and the second – 300 people. Thirdly, the management board of PKP Cargo proposed to the trade unions the suspension of the Company Collective Agreement. Professional organizations refused to reach an agreement on this matter. So it will therefore become the subject of another discussion at the beginning of July.

All these steps are being taken by board members appointed just two months ago. In their opinion, it was the wrong decisions of their predecessors that led to the current, difficult situation of the rail freight carrier. It is worth adding that a few days ago, the general meeting of shareholders of PKP Cargo did not grant discharge to the previous management board for 2023.
