We still do not have an answer to the question of what to do with the acquisition of Polska Press by PKN Orlen?
Two months have passed since the Court of Competition and Consumer Protection suspended the decision of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOiKK) authorizing PKN Orlen to take over Polska Press. The court made such a decision at the request of the Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman), who argued that the takeover of the publishing group by a state-owned company could threaten freedom of speech. A position in this matter was taken by the President of UOKiK, who claims that no existing regulations impose an obligation on him to follow the principle of ensuring observance of the freedom of the media, as he is not an authority established for such purposes.
Currently, the acquisition of Polska Press has been suspended. We are waiting for the date of the hearing to be set by the Court of Competition and Consumer Protection. The president of PKN Orlen and the president of UOKiK agree that the contestation of the decision issued by UOKiK by the Ombudsman is unfounded.
