New tax threatens a wave of bankruptcies

The Enterprise Council believes that a tax on so-called windfall profits will hit the entire economy. Its effect will be numerous business bankruptcies.

The government recently announced the introduction of a new tax. It would be 50 percent and would apply to those companies with so-called extraordinary profits. This is a situation where the profit margin is greater than the average gross margin for the previous three years. The tax is to be aimed at companies employing more than 250 people. The Entrepreneurship Council, which brings together nine major business organizations, has given a very negative assessment of the idea.

Its representatives point out that after the Polish Deal, the government is imposing a new burden on business, and without any consultation with companies. Its effect will be a wave of bankruptcies. Entrepreneurs also point out that it was presented at a time when companies are already facing heavy burdens. The prices of electricity, gas and heat are rising sharply. On top of that, the number of orders is declining, and supply chains are still not back on track.

The Enterprise Council reminds that over the past few years the government has enacted dozens of new fees, tributes and taxes, burdening companies. Meanwhile, the resilience of many of them has its limits.
