Grocery stores on the brink of bankruptcy

Small grocery stores will be bankrupted by high electricity prices. The industry is counting on government assistance.

Grocery stores are being hit harder and harder by high electricity prices. These are establishments that consume a lot of electricity through refrigerators, coolers, freezers and lighting. Its prices have increased several times. Shopkeepers complain that they are increasingly faced with a choice between running an unprofitable business or closing down.

The Polish Chamber of Commerce appealed to the government to ensure that food entrepreneurs have access to energy resources and to regulate prices. According to its representatives, there is a high risk that small stores will go out of business. It is difficult for such establishments to constantly pass on the increase in energy costs to product prices. Then they will become less competitive than discounters, for which food producers offer better price conditions.
